Voluntary ecological year

Since a few years school graduates who are not certain about their occupational future have the opportunity of doing a voluntary ecological year (in short VEY).

What is the voluntary ecological year?
The VEY enables young adults to work and learn for one year as a volunteer in institutions for nature conservation and environmental protection or in environmental education. The sponsoring enterprises organise seminars for exchanging experiences, and they also assist in individual career planning.

How can I become a volunteer?
Young adults who have completed their mandatory school years and who are under the age of 27 can apply for a VEY. The only prerequisites are a interest in ecological issues and the willingness to commit oneself at a deployment site for a year.

Applications can be submitted at the responsible institution which will try to place candidates at their requested sites.

What are the advantages for volunteers?
Volunteers can work hands-on in the environment and learn about an ecologically oriented work world. Young adults receive help and support in shaping their future by gaining insight into one’s profession and also by developing one’s personality at the same time.
Participants will receive a small pocket money along with free room and board.

How to become a VEY site
In order to become a VEY site, the location has to be accepted by the sponsoring association. Evidence has to be provided by showing that the applying location is engaged in works concerned with nature and environment or in environmental education.
Sites can be non-profit organisations in agriculture, horticulture, environmental education or food processing, with special emphasis on ecological aspects. The sites are mostly supported by associations engaged non-profit youth work.

Where can I find such sites and what are the benefits of VEY institutions?
The VEY enables sites to inspire young adults in ecology and also provide manpower in this sector.

Each German state has Internet platforms listing sponsoring associations and sites. Information regarding applications and vacant positions and additional helpful details is provided on these pages.

The VEY has established itself in Germany as a practical year of career orientation for young people between school and secondary education or job training. It is tailored for youths who would like to get involved in our nature and environment.
